The 24MP default blends detail from the 48MP sensor with clean low-light performance, so it suits almost every shot.
JPEG plays nicely everywhere, while switching to HEIF keeps files smaller when storage matters more than sharing.
Turning on Grid and Level helps you keep horizons straight and frame shots with confidence.

What sets the iPhone 17 Pro apart from the 16 Pro and the 17 Pro Max
An 18MP Center Stage front camera reframes group shots, rotates with the scene, and supports Dual Capture.
New in 17 ProA 48MP 100mm tetraprism with an 8× 200mm optical-quality crop. Same lens on the Pro Max.
ProThe A19 Pro powers Clean Up object removal, Visual Intelligence in the viewfinder, and smarter Smart HDR.
Enhanced in 17 ProSharper haptics give better tactile response when adjusting zoom, exposure, and depth, and a single press still launches the camera from any screen.

iPhone 17 Pro-specific advice for getting the most from your camera
What changed for cameras between generations
48MP 4× telephoto, 18MP Center Stage, 4K 120fps, and Apple Log.
The cameras match. Both have three 48MP Fusion cameras, a 48MP 4× / 8× telephoto, and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. The Pro Max is the 6.9-inch body with a larger battery; the Pro is 6.3 inches.
No. The 16 Pro uses a 12MP 5× (120mm). The 17 Pro uses a 48MP 4× tetraprism (100mm) with a 12MP optical-quality 8× crop at 200mm. The 17 Pro Max has the same new telephoto.
Yes. The iPhone 17 Pro supports 4K 120fps recording in Dolby Vision (HEVC) and ProRes, identical to the 17 Pro Max. This capability was first introduced on the iPhone 16 Pro series. The A19 Pro chip provides marginally better thermal management during long recording sessions, so you may get slightly longer continuous recording times before the phone throttles.
18MP Center Stage (ƒ/1.9), the same as the 17 Pro Max. It is not a 24MP TrueDepth sensor. Center Stage reframes groups and supports Dual Capture.
Yes for most people. The cameras are the same. Choose the Pro for the 6.3-inch body, or the Pro Max for the 6.9-inch display and longer battery.
