The 24 MP default blends detail and clean files better than 12 MP or full 48 MP for everyday shots.
Set ProRes encoding to HDR so your pro video carries Dolby Vision color straight out of the camera.
Turn both on to keep horizons straight and frame with the rule of thirds before you shoot.

What sets the iPhone 17 Pro Max apart from the 16 Pro Max and other phones
An 18MP Center Stage front camera reframes group shots, rotates with the scene, and supports Dual Capture.
New in 17 ProClean Up removes unwanted objects, Visual Intelligence identifies objects and scenes through the viewfinder, and the A19 Pro Neural Engine drives smarter scene-aware HDR.
Enhanced in 17 ProThe capacitive Camera Control button returns with better haptics, so you can feel each step when cycling zoom, exposure, depth, and style without looking at the screen.
Improved in 17 ProThe A19 Pro speeds up image processing and runs cooler for longer 4K 120fps takes. Its Neural Engine powers smarter Night Mode and portrait segmentation.

iPhone 17 Pro Max-specific advice for getting the most from your camera
What changed for cameras between generations
48MP 4× telephoto, 18MP Center Stage, 4K 120fps, and Apple Log.
It has an 18MP Center Stage front camera (ƒ/1.9), not a 24MP TrueDepth sensor. Center Stage reframes groups and supports Dual Capture.
The cameras match. Both have three 48MP Fusion cameras, a 48MP 4× / 8× telephoto, and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. The Pro Max is the 6.9-inch body with a larger battery; the Pro is 6.3 inches.
Yes. The iPhone 17 Pro Max with A19 Pro chip supports enhanced Apple Intelligence features for photography. These include the Clean Up tool for removing unwanted objects from photos with a tap, Visual Intelligence for identifying objects and scenes through the camera viewfinder, and improved Smart HDR with scene-aware processing powered by the upgraded Neural Engine. All processing happens on-device for privacy.
Camera Control is the same capacitive button as on the 16 Pro models: press to launch the camera, light-press and swipe to change exposure or zoom. Apple did not ship a second-generation Camera Control. Set the light-press action to Exposure unless you live on the 4× lens.
Yes. Like the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the 17 Pro Max records ProRes at up to 4K 120fps in Dolby Vision. The A19 Pro chip provides slightly better thermal efficiency, so you may get slightly longer recording times before thermal throttling kicks in. Internal ProRes recording on the 256GB model remains limited to 1080p — connect an external SSD via USB-C (10 Gbps) for 4K ProRes on that storage tier.
