Key Features

What sets the iPhone 16 Pro Max apart from other phones and previous iPhones

Camera Control

A new capacitive button on the right side of the phone. Single press launches the camera. Light press and swipe to adjust zoom, exposure, depth of field, and more — all without touching the screen.

New in 16 Pro

4K 120fps Dolby Vision

Record stunning slow-motion at 4K resolution with 120 frames per second in HEVC or ProRes. Previously limited to 4K 60fps on the 15 Pro Max. Perfect for cinematic B-roll and action sequences.

New in 16 Pro

48MP Ultra Wide with AF

The ultra-wide camera jumped from 12MP to 48MP and gained autofocus. This enables sharper macro shots at 2cm, better low-light ultra-wide photos, and improved spatial video capture.

New in 16 Pro

Apple Log & ProRes

Shoot with Apple Log for up to 17 stops of dynamic range, preserving maximum highlight and shadow detail for professional color grading in DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro.

Pro Tips & Gotchas

iPhone 16 Pro Max-specific tips the manual won't tell you

Camera Control Mastery

  • Single press to launch camera from any screen, even Lock Screen
  • Light press + swipe to change zoom continuously (smoother than tapping)
  • Double light-press to cycle between adjustment modes
  • Works through most slim cases, but thick cases may reduce sensitivity

Thermal Management

  • 4K 120fps ProRes will throttle after ~8–12 min in warm conditions
  • 4K 30fps HEVC can record for 60+ min without thermal issues
  • Remove case when shooting long ProRes takes
  • The A18 Pro runs cooler than A17 Pro, but still generates heat at 4K120

Photographic Styles

  • New in iOS 18: updated Photographic Styles with more granular control
  • Styles are baked into HEIF — not reversible like RAW edits
  • Use ProRAW if you want full flexibility in post
  • Standard, Rich Contrast, and Luminous are the most versatile presets

Battery During Video

  • 4K30 HEVC: ~3–4 hours of recording on a full charge
  • 4K30 ProRes: ~25–30% drain per hour
  • 4K120 drains battery about 2× faster than 4K30
  • MagSafe battery packs help, but charging during recording adds heat

Lens Switching Behavior

  • iPhone auto-switches to Main in very low light, even when 5× is selected
  • Lock the lens in third-party apps (Blackmagic, Halide) for manual control
  • Macro mode auto-switches to Ultra Wide — disable auto-macro in Settings
  • The 2× virtual lens is a crop from Main, so quality is slightly lower than 1×

File Transfer

  • USB-C at 10 Gbps (USB 3) — significantly faster than 15 Pro's USB 3
  • Large ProRes files won't AirDrop — use cable or external SSD
  • Import directly to Final Cut Pro / DaVinci Resolve via cable
  • iCloud doesn't back up ProRes files to save space

iPhone 16 Pro Max vs 15 Pro Max

ProRes Up to 4K60 Up to 4K120
Spatial Video Yes Yes (improved)
Display Size 6.7" 6.9" Larger
USB USB 3 (10 Gbps) USB 3 (10 Gbps)
Worth the upgrade? If you shoot a lot of video, 4K120 and the improved ultra-wide make the 16 Pro Max a significant step up. If you primarily shoot photos, the Main and Telephoto cameras are identical — the Camera Control button is the biggest workflow improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the iPhone 16 Pro Max camera

Does iPhone 16 Pro Max support ProRes?

Yes. The iPhone 16 Pro Max records ProRes at up to 4K 120fps. You can record ProRes internally or to an external SSD via USB-C (USB 3, 10 Gbps). On the 256GB model, internal ProRes recording is limited to 1080p — use an external SSD for 4K ProRes on that model.

What is Camera Control on iPhone 16 Pro Max?

Camera Control is a new capacitive button on the right side of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. A single press launches the camera instantly. Once in the camera app, a light press opens a quick control bar where you can swipe to adjust exposure, zoom, depth of field, and other settings without touching the screen. Double light-press cycles between different adjustment modes.

Can iPhone 16 Pro Max shoot 4K at 120fps?

Yes — this is one of the headline new features. The iPhone 16 Pro Max can record 4K at 120fps in Dolby Vision (HEVC) or ProRes. This is double the maximum frame rate of the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 4K resolution. It's ideal for dramatic slow-motion footage that can be played back at 24fps or 30fps for a 4–5× slowdown effect.

What is Apple Log on iPhone 16 Pro Max?

Apple Log is a flat color profile (log gamma curve) designed for professional color grading. It preserves maximum dynamic range (up to 17 stops) by capturing a very flat, desaturated image that contains more highlight and shadow detail than standard Dolby Vision. You need to color grade Apple Log footage in software like DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, or Premiere Pro. Apple Log requires shooting in ProRes format.

How many megapixels is the iPhone 16 Pro Max camera?

The iPhone 16 Pro Max has three rear cameras: a 48MP main (Fusion) camera, a 48MP ultra wide camera (upgraded from 12MP on the 15 Pro Max), and a 12MP 5× telephoto camera. By default, photos are output at 24MP using pixel binning for better low-light performance and smaller file sizes. You can switch to full 48MP in ProRAW Max mode.
