24MP Photo mode

The pixel-binned 24MP default blends detail and clean low-light results. Switch to 48MP ProRAW only when you need to crop or print big.

ProRes HDR Video encoding

HDR encoding keeps the widest dynamic range for grading, while Most Compatible capture saves smaller everyday files.

24 mm Main lens default

Sets the focal length your 1× shots use. Pick 28 mm or 35 mm if you prefer a tighter everyday frame.

Camera Control tip: Customize the light-press action in Settings → Camera → Camera Control. Options include Exposure, Zoom, Depth, Cameras, Style, and Tone. Exposure is the most useful default for most photographers.

Pro Tips & Gotchas

iPhone 16 Pro Max-specific tips the manual won't tell you

Camera Control Mastery

  • Single press launches the camera from any screen, even the Lock Screen
  • Light press and swipe to zoom continuously, smoother than tapping
  • Double light-press to cycle between adjustment modes
  • Works through slim cases, but thick cases reduce sensitivity

Thermal Management

  • 4K 120fps ProRes throttles after ~8–12 min when warm
  • 4K 30fps HEVC records 60+ min without thermal issues
  • Pull the case off for long ProRes takes

Photographic Styles

  • iOS 18 adds more granular control over Photographic Styles
  • Styles bake into HEIF and are not reversible like RAW edits
  • Shoot ProRAW for full flexibility in post
  • Standard, Rich Contrast, and Luminous are the most versatile

Battery During Video

  • 4K30 HEVC runs ~3–4 hours on a full charge
  • 4K30 ProRes drains ~25–30% per hour
  • 4K120 drains about 2× faster than 4K30
  • MagSafe packs help, but charging while recording adds heat

Lens Switching Behavior

  • The phone auto-switches to Main in very low light, even at 5×
  • Lock the lens in apps like Blackmagic or Halide for manual control
  • Disable auto-macro in Settings to stop the Ultra Wide switch
  • The 2× lens is a Main crop, so it is slightly softer than 1×

File Transfer

  • USB-C runs at 10 Gbps (USB 3) for fast offloads
  • Large ProRes files will not AirDrop, so use a cable or SSD
  • Import straight to Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve via cable
  • iCloud does not back up ProRes files to save space

Worth the upgrade? If you shoot a lot of video, 4K120 and the improved ultra-wide make the 16 Pro Max a significant step up. If you primarily shoot photos, the Main and Telephoto cameras are identical — the Camera Control button is the biggest workflow improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the iPhone 16 Pro Max camera

Does iPhone 16 Pro Max support ProRes?

Yes. The iPhone 16 Pro Max records ProRes at up to 4K 120fps. You can record ProRes internally or to an external SSD via USB-C (USB 3, 10 Gbps). On the 256GB model, internal ProRes recording is limited to 1080p — use an external SSD for 4K ProRes on that model.

What is Camera Control on iPhone 16 Pro Max?

Camera Control is a new capacitive button on the right side of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. A single press launches the camera instantly. Once in the camera app, a light press opens a quick control bar where you can swipe to adjust exposure, zoom, depth of field, and other settings without touching the screen. Double light-press cycles between different adjustment modes.

Can iPhone 16 Pro Max shoot 4K at 120fps?

Yes — this is one of the headline new features. The iPhone 16 Pro Max can record 4K at 120fps in Dolby Vision (HEVC) or ProRes. This is double the maximum frame rate of the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 4K resolution. It's ideal for dramatic slow-motion footage that can be played back at 24fps or 30fps for a 4–5× slowdown effect.

What is Apple Log on iPhone 16 Pro Max?

Apple Log is a flat color profile (log gamma curve) designed for professional color grading. It preserves maximum dynamic range (up to 17 stops) by capturing a very flat, desaturated image that contains more highlight and shadow detail than standard Dolby Vision. You need to color grade Apple Log footage in software like DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, or Premiere Pro. Apple Log requires shooting in ProRes format.

How many megapixels is the iPhone 16 Pro Max camera?

The iPhone 16 Pro Max has three rear cameras: a 48MP main (Fusion) camera, a 48MP ultra wide camera (upgraded from 12MP on the 15 Pro Max), and a 12MP 5× telephoto camera. By default, photos are output at 24MP using pixel binning for better low-light performance and smaller file sizes. You can switch to full 48MP in ProRAW Max mode.
