Key Features

The headline features that make the iPhone 15 Pro a major camera upgrade

Apple Log

The first iPhone to support log video recording. Apple Log captures a flat image with up to 17 stops of dynamic range, designed for professional color grading workflows. Requires ProRes format. Transforms the iPhone into a viable B-cam alongside cinema cameras.

New in 15 Pro

USB-C (USB 3)

Apple's first iPhone with USB-C. The Pro models run at USB 3 speeds (10 Gbps), enabling fast ProRes file transfers and direct recording to external SSDs. A monumental improvement over Lightning's 480 Mbps.

Action Button

Replaces the traditional mute switch with a customizable physical button. Assign it to launch the Camera app for the fastest possible way to start shooting — press it from any screen, even with the phone locked.

New in 15 Pro

Spatial Video

Capture stereoscopic 3D video using the Main and Ultra Wide cameras simultaneously. Records at 1080p 30fps in MV-HEVC format for viewing on Apple Vision Pro. Hold in landscape for correct depth capture.

Pro Tips & Gotchas

iPhone 15 Pro-specific tips to get the best out of your camera

3× Telephoto Tips

  • 77mm is the classic portrait focal length — flattering compression for faces
  • In very low light, iOS may switch to the Main camera even at 3× — the crop will look noisier
  • Lock the lens via third-party apps (Halide, Blackmagic Camera) for consistent results
  • Combine 2× (48mm crop) and 3× (77mm optical) for a flexible dual-tele workflow

Action Button Mastery

  • Set to Camera for the fastest way to start shooting from any screen
  • Create a Shortcut to launch specific modes (video, selfie, slo-mo)
  • Works even from the Lock Screen — no Face ID needed to launch camera
  • The button is physical, not capacitive — it works with any gloves or cases

USB-C Workflow

  • Record ProRes directly to a USB-C SSD for unlimited recording at 4K
  • 10 Gbps transfers — a 6 GB ProRes clip copies in about 5 seconds
  • Compatible with most USB-C SSDs (Samsung T7, SanDisk Extreme, etc.)
  • Standard iPhone 15 (non-Pro) uses USB 2 — only Pro models get USB 3

Apple Log Grading

  • Apple Log footage looks extremely flat — it's designed to be graded
  • Start with Apple's official LUT or a camera-to-Rec.709 conversion
  • DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, and Premiere Pro all support Apple Log
  • Requires ProRes — not available in HEVC mode

Thermal Management

  • A17 Pro's 3nm process is efficient, but ProRes at 4K still generates significant heat
  • In warm weather, 4K ProRes may throttle after ~15–20 minutes
  • 4K30 HEVC is thermally comfortable for over an hour of continuous recording
  • Remove your case during extended ProRes shoots for better heat dissipation

Battery During Video

  • 4K30 HEVC: approximately 2.5–3 hours per full charge
  • 4K30 ProRes: drains about 35% per hour — plan for shorter sessions
  • The 15 Pro has a smaller battery than the Pro Max — more limited recording time
  • MagSafe battery packs extend recording, but add heat during charging

iPhone 15 Pro vs 14 Pro

ProRes Yes (4K30) Yes (4K60)

Worth the upgrade? The camera hardware (main, ultra wide, telephoto) is largely identical. The upgrade is about workflow: USB-C for fast file transfers, Apple Log for professional color grading, the Action button for instant camera access, and Spatial Video if you own or plan to get Apple Vision Pro. For video shooters, it's a meaningful step forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the iPhone 15 Pro camera

Does iPhone 15 Pro have 5x telephoto?

No. The iPhone 15 Pro has a 12MP 3× telephoto at 77mm with ƒ/2.8 aperture. The 5× tetraprism telephoto (120mm) is exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, the 3× lens is still excellent for portraits, candid photography, and mid-range subjects — and it actually performs better in low light than the Pro Max's smaller 5× sensor.

Is iPhone 15 Pro the first iPhone with USB-C?

Yes. The entire iPhone 15 lineup (including iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max) was Apple's first to ship with USB-C, replacing the Lightning connector used since 2012. Importantly, the Pro models support USB 3 at 10 Gbps, while the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are limited to USB 2 speeds (480 Mbps). USB 3 enables fast ProRes transfers and external SSD recording.

Can iPhone 15 Pro record in Apple Log?

Yes. Apple Log debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. It captures a flat, log-encoded image with up to 17 stops of dynamic range, specifically designed for professional color grading in post-production. Apple Log requires shooting in ProRes format — it's not available when recording in HEVC. Use DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, or Premiere Pro to grade the footage.

What is the difference between iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max camera?

The only camera hardware difference is the telephoto lens. The 15 Pro has a 3× (77mm) telephoto, while the 15 Pro Max has a 5× (120mm) tetraprism telephoto. Everything else — the 48MP main camera, 12MP ultra wide, ProRes, Apple Log, Spatial Video, and Cinematic Mode — is identical. Choose the Pro Max if extreme telephoto reach is important to you.

Does iPhone 15 Pro have Camera Control?

No. Camera Control is a capacitive button introduced on the iPhone 16 series in September 2024. The iPhone 15 Pro instead has an Action button (which replaced the mute switch). You can assign the Action button to launch the Camera app for quick access, though it doesn't offer the swipe-to-adjust functionality that Camera Control provides on newer models.
