If you only buy two things for night sky work, buy these. Everything else is optional until these two are solid.

Fast wide-angle lens

Astro is an aperture game: going from f/4 to f/1.8 more than doubles the starlight you capture in the same 20 seconds. This is the single biggest image-quality upgrade in night photography.

What to look for: 14–24mm on full frame (10–16mm APS-C), f/2.8 or faster, easy manual focus.

Skip it if: your kit zoom already opens to f/2.8 at 16mm — spend on a tripod first.

Core kit

These keep you shooting once the lens and tripod are in the bag — not nicer photos, just usable nights.

Intervalometer

Star trails and stacked Milky Way frames need dozens of identical exposures. A timer remote does that without touching the camera.

What to look for: Interval + long-exposure / bulb control. Match the connector to your camera (or use a wireless model that lists your body).

Skip it if: your camera already has an interval timer in the menu — many recent bodies do.

Red headlamp

White light ruins night vision for you and everyone else on the ridge. Red light lets you change cards and find the focus ring without flooding the scene. Same idea as this site’s Night Vision mode.

What to look for: A true red LED (not a white light with a red filter slapped on), a lock so it does not fire in the bag, and a dim setting.

Spare batteries and fast SD cards

Cold kills batteries. A 90-minute Milky Way session can drain two packs, and a slow card will choke when you start stacking 20-second frames.

What to look for: Genuine-spec batteries for your body, and a V30 or faster SD card (SanDisk Extreme Pro class).

Nice to have

Buy these after you have sharp, well-exposed single frames. A tracker will not fix a wobbly tripod.

Star tracker

A tracker follows the sky so you can shoot minutes instead of 20 seconds, at lower ISO. It is a real upgrade — after you have maxed single exposures.

What to look for: Payload comfortably above your camera + lens weight, a polar-alignment aid, and a simple interval mode.

Skip it if: you have not yet shot a season of untracked wide-field frames. Learn the sky and your lens first.

Lens dew heater

Dew fogs the front element on humid nights and ruins an hour of work. A thin USB strap is cheaper than a ruined session.

What to look for: USB-powered lens strip that fits your front-element diameter, plus a 10,000 mAh power bank.

FAQ

Do I need a full-frame camera for the Milky Way?

No. Aperture and a dark sky matter more than sensor size. An APS-C body with a fast wide lens (around 10–16mm f/2.8 or faster) will outshoot a full-frame body with a slow kit zoom.

Is a star tracker worth it?

Later. Get clean 15–20 second wide-field frames first. A tracker helps when you want longer exposures at lower ISO, not when you are still fighting focus, composition, and a shaky tripod.

Which tripod spec actually matters?

Stability, not height or claimed load rating. If the head creeps or the legs flex when you walk around it, stars will trail. A mid-size aluminum travel tripod with a real ball head is enough; carbon is a comfort upgrade, not a requirement.
